Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the event would attract thousands of visitors to Sydney, and provides a valuable chance for the Socceroos to play a top quality European opponent.
“I’m delighted the NSW Government has secured this fantastic sporting event for Sydney, 10 years since Greece last visited our shores,” Mr Ayres said.
“Greece has an enormous following right around the world, and it will be great to welcome these passionate fans to Sydney.
“It will be a vital match for the Socceroos as they continue in their bid for World Cup qualification. It will also be great to see Ange Postecoglou and the team return to ANZ Stadium, the site of their historic Asian Cup victory last year.”
Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said the match joins a packed calendar of major events in winter.
“The match between the Socceroos and Greece will be just one part of a Sydney sporting smorgasbord in the coming months, with our city also hosting two State of Origin matches, the Bledisloe Cup, the Australian Badminton Open and the blockbuster College Football match between the University of California and the University of Hawaii,” Ms Chipchase said.
Before the Greece match, the Socceroos will play Jordan at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium on 26 March.
Tickets for both matches are on sale via ticketek.com.au
