The Economist Intelligence Unit's latest Global Liveability Index has named Sydney as the world’s fourth most liveable city for 2026.

The annual ranking assessed 173 cities worldwide across indicators such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure to identify those offering the highest quality of life.

Copenhagen took out the top spot on the list for the second year in a row.

Sydney received an overall score of 97, with its easy access to nature, multicultural neighbourhoods and outdoor lifestyle among the reasons the city is regarded as so liveable, with these assets also elevating its appeal among visitors.

Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper told BBC News: "Sydney makes it easy because wherever you are, you're never too far from a great view, whether it's the harbour, the Blue Mountains or the beaches.

"The mix of cultures, the neighbourhoods, the incredible food and the lifestyle make Sydney special. It's a global city, but it still feels like a collection of local communities."

Mr Kamper suggested visitors venture beyond the usual tourist spots such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Bondi to experience local culture.

"Burwood is the Sydney locals know and love," he said. "It's full of life, packed with incredible food and it's one of the best places to experience Sydney's multicultural character."

He also suggested attending a football game.

"Very few places in the world do sport like Sydney," Mr Kamper said.
