Expedia has revealed the top trending domestic summer destinations for Australian travellers, with five NSW towns on the top 10 list.
While beach holidays were still a top choice for the festive season, data shows Australians are shifting inland for milder summer weather and slower escapes.
Based on an analysis of domestic accommodation demand on Expedia.com.au for travel between 1 December 2025 and 31 January 2026, compared to the same period the previous year searches for Jindabyne have risen 65 per cent, while Tweed Heads is up 55 per cent, Kingscliff is up 35 per cent, Kangaroo Valley is up 35 per cent and Kiama is up 30 per cent.
Expedia’s Sarah King said: “The coast will always be classic; however, it’s worth looking inland this year, especially for last-minute bookings. Destinations such as Jindabyne can potentially offer average daily accommodation rates of up to 55% less than the popular coastal hotspots and often less crowds.”
The travel provider’s research shows Australians are trading hustle for harmony in 2026, with half (50 per cent) planning to swap the stress of over-planned holidays for peaceful escapes in smaller towns.
According to its annual Unpack ’26 travel trend report travellers are increasingly drawn to destinations that offer a gentler pace and fewer crowds.
Expedia Group Senior Director Darren Karshagen said: “Travellers are telling us they want to feel restored, not rushed.
“The rise of ‘slow-down towns’ reflects a growing desire to connect with local communities and embrace the simplicity of slower travel. It’s not just about where you go — it’s about how you feel when you get there.”
One in two (51 per cent) of Australian travellers also said they prefer to holiday over the busy festive seasons than spend it at home with family.
