NSW is extending its lead this summer as Australia’s favourite destination for caravan and camping holidays, with the state expected to welcome around 1.5 million domestic overnight caravan and camping visitors.

The latest Tourism Research Australia data shows NSW was the number one state in Australia for domestic overnight caravan and camping visitors, nights and expenditure from July-September 2025.

There were a total of 1.3 million domestic overnight caravan and camping visitors to NSW during the quarter, who stayed four million nights at holiday parks and camping areas across the state.

NSW was also the number one destination in Australia for domestic road tripping visitors, nights and expenditure in 2024.

The NSW Visitor Economy Strategy 2035 identifies road trips as a key driver of NSW’s visitor economy. From scenic road trips to eco-adventures in World Heritage-listed parks, regional NSW provides high-value visitor experiences that deepen connections with nature, culture and local communities, encouraging repeat visitation.

Destination NSW also partnered with the Caravan and Camping Industry Association on a ‘Feel More, Live More’ marketing program in 2025 to boost year-round visitation to the state’s 400 holiday parks. Developed as an extension of the Feel New brand, ‘Feel More, Live More’, the campaign aimed to support the sustainable growth of regional visitor economies.

Destination NSW CEO Karen Jones said:“NSW is the number one destination in Australia for domestic overnight caravan and camping holidaymakers and Destination NSW is committed to continuing to support the sector and the valuable contribution it makes to growing the visitor economy.

“The NSW Government is investing in scenic driving routes, upgraded rest stops and enhanced wayfinding to encourage longer stays and increased regional spending.

“The flexible, immersive and sustainable travel experiences offered by the caravan and camping sector will play a key role in positioning our state as the top adventure travel destination in the country.”

Caravan and Camping Industry Association (CCIA) NSW CEO Wayne Lange said: “The popularity of caravan and camping continues to grow because it offers freedom, flexibility and real connection, whether it’s a summer beach break, a riverside stay, a wellness escape or a regional road trip.

“NSW is Australia’s number one caravan and camping destination because it offers amazing diversity within easy driving distance, from coastal and waterfront escapes to regional food and wine, arts and culture, wellness and road trips.

“Many parks throughout NSW now offer resort-style facilities including water parks, fully equipped camp kitchens, mini golf, cafés, restaurants and dog-friendly options.

“This summer, coastal and waterfront regions are once again the most popular caravan and camping destinations this summer, with the Port Stephens, Mid North Coast, Coffs Coast & Tweed Coast followed by the South and Sapphire Coast shaping up as some of the most popular destinations.”

Tathra Beach Eco Camp, which offers glamping among regenerated bush, recently won Gold in the Caravan & Holiday Parks category at the 2025 NSW Tourism Awards and will represent the state at the Australian Tourism Awards in March 2026.

Tathra Eco Camp CEO Carmen Risby said:“Caravan and camping holidays are accessible to so many people, regardless of their budget.

“You still experience the same holiday no matter which way you choose to sleep. You can throw in the swags, hook up a new caravan or book a luxury cabin or glamping tent. The possibilities are unlimited.

“The Sapphire Coast is being recognised for its incredible beauty and natural wonders. It’s a place to get out in nature and adventure in breathtaking Australian scenery yet it’s still so accessible and family friendly.

“Summer is very heavily booked for us and for a much longer period than previous years.

“Every single thing we do is purposefully, intentionally sustainable in every possible way. We are so proud to be leading the change in our industry and encouraging our peers in the caravan and camping sector to come along on this rewarding journey with us.”
