Opening at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in March 2015, Les Misérables tells the story of sacrifice, redemption and unrequited love, set against the backdrop of 19th century France.

“After almost three decades, Les Misérables remains incredibly popular with audiences and the NSW Government is pleased to have secured this anniversary season for Sydney,” Mr Stoner said.

“It is estimated that more than 91,000 visitors will come to Sydney to see Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Les Misérables at the Capitol Theatre, injecting around $32 million in visitor expenditure over six months,” he said.

Mr Stoner said Les Misérables joins a stellar line-up on the Sydney and NSW Major Events Calendar.

“Sydney is Australia’s live performance capital and we’re delighted to host Les Misérables in addition to Strictly Ballroom The Musical, the world premiere of Matilda The Musical and the Helpmann Awards, which recognises artistic achievement and excellence in Australia’s live performance sectors,” he said.

The Australian production of Les Misérables is presented by Michael Cassel Group in a dramatic new staging with reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Les Misérables author, Victor Hugo.

Since opening in London in 1985, Les Misérables has been seen by over 65 million people and received more than 100 major awards.
