Destination NSW has engaged Aboriginal-owned and led consultancy Murawin to deliver one of the initiatives that are part of the NSW Aboriginal Visitor Experience Accelerator (AVEA).

The project is part of the Strategic Indigenous Tourism Projects (SITP) to help grow Aboriginal tourism in NSW. The Australian and NSW Governments are co-investing $3.6 million in SITP, which contributes to Outcome 8 of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, strong economic participation and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, and to Closing the Gap Priority Reform 5 in NSW, Employment, Business Growth and Economic Prosperity.

The NSW Aboriginal Visitor Experience Accelerator, led by Destination NSW in collaboration with Create NSW and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, is designed to drive the growth, capability and reach of Aboriginal-led experiences and events across the state.

The Aboriginal Experiences and Events in NSW engagement project aims to better understand the Aboriginal tourism business sector across NSW. In particular, it will identify where the opportunities and challenges are for business owners in areas such as tours, attractions, food and drink, accommodation, events and arts, culture and creative practitioners.

Insights gathered through interviews and yarning circles will help inform future planning and capability development in the Aboriginal tourism sector.

Murawin is seeking expression of interest from Aboriginal-owned tourism businesses of varying sizes, locations and experience across NSW. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consultants will conduct online interviews with businesses, and in-person yarning circles.
