Mr Baird made the announcement at today’s launch of the 2016 Australian Open of Surfing where he was joined by surfing legends Mark Occhilupo and Damien Hardman, and future star Isabella Nichols.
“My love for surfing and the ocean is no secret and I’m so happy this great event has been secured at my local beach for the next three years,” Mr Baird said.
“The Northern Beaches really comes alive when this event is on and it’s a great opportunity for tourists to visit the best beach in the world and experience Australian surf culture.”
The Australian Open of Surfing is Australia’s biggest action sports and youth culture festival and attracts some of the world’s best surfers and skateboarders.
Last year’s event attracted thousands of people to Manly Beach and provided a major economic boost for the local economy.
The event is expected to generate more than $4 million dollars in visitor spend over the next three years in a welcome boost for local shops, restaurants and businesses.
The 2016 Australian Open of Surfing be held from 27 February to 6 March and will attract up-and-coming local talent as well as some of the world’s best surfers in the lead up to the Quicksilver Pro on the Gold Coast.
The event has been secured by the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, in partnership with sports management company IMG.
Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said Manly was one of the State’s most iconic destinations for tourists.
“The Australian Open of Surfing will highlight everything Manly has to offer, from its beautiful beach to high quality restaurants, hotels and attractions. The AOS is a great occasion to visit NSW and take some time to explore Manly,” she said.
