Sydney will become the first city in the world to celebrate Global Wellness Day 2026 on 13 June, as a newly released global wellness travel trends report reveals growing demand for restorative travel experiences focused on emotional wellbeing, joy and reconnection.
The Sydney celebrations will bring many of these emerging wellness travel trends to life through Well Traveller’s Rituals of Joy at Bennelong Lawn in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney from 10am.
The Global Wellness Institute’s Wellness Tourism Initiative Trends report reveals that travellers are increasingly seeking experiences that help them slow down, emotionally recharge and reconnect, with “restorative travel” emerging as one of the defining shifts shaping the global wellness tourism sector.
Top new trends include nervous system reset retreats and sleep tourism to ocean bathing, slower travel and nature immersion, highlighting a growing consumer focus on joy and calm.
According to the Global Wellness Institute, Australia is now the fifth largest wellness tourism market globally, reflecting growing demand for travel that supports mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.
The shift comes as Australians increasingly prioritise balance, emotional wellbeing and meaningful connection in everyday life. Research from the Global Wellness Institute found Australians rated their overall quality of life at an average of 6.5 out of 10, with sleep, financial and emotional health among the lowest scoring areas.
To mark Global Wellness Day 2026, the free ticketed gathering will feature a curated program of harbour-inspired rituals including a sunrise Sydney Harbour kayak experience with Sydney Kayaking Tours, gentle movement sessions by Elysia Wellness Retreat, sound bath experiences and a guided meditation led by Megan Larsen, founder of Sodashi.
Australian television personality Barry Du Bois will also share personal reflections on resilience, gratitude and the importance of finding joy through life’s challenges.
Additional free Global Wellness Day 2026 experiences across Sydney will include mindfulness sessions in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, a ’walk and weave’ First Nations-led experience at North Head Sanctuary in Manly and complimentary sauna and breathwork sessions in Bondi, reflecting the growing popularity of nature immersion, heat rituals and restorative wellness experiences.
“The new wellness travel trends show travellers are increasingly seeking experiences that help them slow down and feel calmer, more connected and emotionally restored - not simply physically well,” said Katherine Droga, Founder of Well Traveller and Australian Ambassador for Global Wellness Day.
“We’re seeing more travellers seeking experiences that create a sense of joy, calm and reconnection - whether that’s an ocean swim, a harbour walk, time in nature or simply sharing meaningful experiences with friends and family.”
“Researchers including Brené Brown have also highlighted the strong relationship between gratitude and joy, encouraging people to notice small moments and actively practice appreciation in everyday life.”
“Sydney and NSW are uniquely positioned to lead the growing global demand for restorative and wellbeing-focused travel experiences,” said Destination NSW CEO Karen Jones.
“From harbour experiences and coastal walks to ocean bathing, nature immersion and world-class wellness retreats, NSW offers the connection, outdoor lifestyle and sense of restoration travellers are increasingly seeking. Global Wellness Day 2026 provides a powerful opportunity to showcase Sydney as a global wellness destination.”
Celebrated in more than 170 countries, Global Wellness Day is a not-for-profit global movement encouraging healthier, more connected living. The 2026 global theme, Joy Magenta, symbolises optimism, energy and emotional connection.
