Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the events have been secured by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW.
“Hockey is an extremely popular participation sport in Australia, and I am pleased the NSW Government will partner with Hockey Australia to bring major hockey tournaments to Sydney and Regional NSW over the next five years,” Mr Ayres said.
“The agreement will span the period 2016-2020 and will deliver a total of 32 domestic and international events, which will have a huge impact on the NSW visitor economy, contributing over $30 million in estimated expenditure. This is great news for the State’s hotels, restaurants and attractions.”
The agreement will see international hockey return to Sydney, with a new annual marquee international event to be launched by Hockey Australia in 2018.
NSW will also host international hockey events and National Championships events at various locations across Sydney and Regional NSW including:
- Boys and Girls Australian U15 Championships 2016-2020
- Men’s and Women’s Australian U21 Championships 2016-2020
- Australian Indoor Championships 2018-2020
- Australian Men’s and Women’s Masters events 2017-2020
- One International hockey tournament each year 2017-2020 featuring a new marquee event in 2018
The 2016 Australian U21 Championships will be held at Sydney Olympic Park, and Wollongong will host the 2016 Australian U15 Championships.
