The Rugby Sevens carnival returns to Sydney from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 February, 2017 at Allianz Stadium, Moore Park.
This Summer, the Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens team will play in an official HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series event, in Australia for the first time. Fans will have the opportunity to visit Sydney and cheer on the Rio Olympic Gold Medal winners as they begin their campaign to become the first Australian team to win back-to-back World Series titles.
The Sydney 7s tournament will also feature 16 of the world’s top-ranked Men’s Rugby Sevens teams who will compete in 45 free-flowing, fast-moving matches across two days.
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres said the event is a must see for all sports fans.
“The inaugural HSBC Sydney 7s in February 2016 attracted sell-out crowds at Allianz Stadium on both days of competition. The Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens team came within minutes of capturing the title, falling to trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in an epic final. With our all-conquering Women’s side playing as well, the 2017 Sydney 7s is an unmissable event.”
Here are seven reasons to head to the Sydney 7s:
- It’s fast and fun
With a try scored almost every 70 seconds, there is no downtime at the Sydney 7s. Only seven players per side take to the field which means a faster, free-flowing game, with more points scored. - The players are highly athletic
With fewer players on a full-size pitch, the athletes need to be super fit to cover the field, resulting in a faster and more dynamic game. - Everyone dresses up
Sevens is a global party famous for its carnival atmosphere. Rugby fans from all over the world dress up for the occasion in fun and frivolous outfits. In 2017, the fancy dress theme is “Go Colourful”. - It is an Olympic Sport
Men’s and Women’s Rugby Sevens made its debut at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the teams who won medals will compete in Sydney. But it’s not just the traditional rugby nations competing, emerging rugby nations such as Kenya, USA, Japan and Russia are all taking part in the tournament, and everyone loves barracking for an underdog. - Corporate hospitality starts from just $20
Where else can you get corporate hospitality for just $20? Located in the Eastern Grandstand, the Outdoor Boxes are the ideal way to soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the Sydney 7s as the sun sets on the first day of the tournament. Guests will have the opportunity to have catering directly delivered to the box while they enjoy every minute of the rugby action. - Fun day out for the whole family
There will be a special dedicated family “fan village” for kids to learn skills and take part in drill sessions, get their face painted, or just chill out during the tournament. - Why Sydney is different to other 7s cities
Sydney will be abuzz with Rugby Sevens festivities, visitors looking to extend their stay in Sydney can make a splash at one of the nearby Eastern Suburbs beaches, or enjoy a long-lunch in fashionable Paddington just a stone’s throw from Allianz Stadium.
