The Arts Preview evening was held at the new Southee and Badgery Pavilion at Sydney Showground, a new 10,000 square metre exhibition hall housing the Arts and Crafts, Fashion and Style, and Flower and Garden exhibitions this year and included the presence of RAS President Glenn Dudley.

“I congratulate each of the 24 winners of the Sydney Royal Easter Show Arts Competition for 2014. The standard of work is exceptional and a clear indication that the arts sector in NSW continues to flourish,” Mr Souris said.

Mr Souris presented the Francis Binnie Award for the most meritorious exhibit from class 50 to 347 in the Standard of Excellence Case to Val Elias of Windsor, NSW and also presented the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Art Prize for the best rural subject painted in traditional style to Melvin Duffy of Swansea, NSW.

“Congratulations to the winners of these prestigious awards, and also to Margaret Finucane of Tamworth, who received the Long Serving Exhibitor Award for having taken part in the Arts Competition for 26 years,” Mr Souris said.

“I am also pleased to say the NSW Government is continuing its support for the Sydney Royal Easter Show as a key event on the Sydney and NSW Events Calendar.

“The Sydney Royal Easter Show helps promote the arts as well as tourism and it consistently delivers more than $20 million in visitor expenditure each year for NSW.

“The Arts and Crafts Competition has been a feature of the Show for many years, having run almost continuously since 1869. It is an important cultural institution, having reflected the changes in the Australian cultural landscape over this period.

“I hope visitors to the Sydney Royal Easter Show this year put the Southee and Badgery Pavilion firmly on their to-do list – it certainly won’t disappoint,” Mr Souris said.
