Bruce Baird AM, a long-standing advocate for Australia’s visitor economy and a key figure in securing the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, has passed away aged 84.

Mr Baird served in the NSW Parliament from 1984 to 1995, holding several senior ministerial portfolios, including Minister for Sydney’s Olympic Bid, Minister for Tourism and Minister for Transport. As Minister responsible for Sydney’s Olympic bid, he played a significant role in helping secure the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Following his parliamentary career, Mr Baird continued to make an important contribution to Australia’s visitor economy through a range of industry leadership roles. He served as Managing Director of the Tourism Council of Australia and chaired the Tourism & Transport Forum on two occasions, including during the sector’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Baird later represented the federal electorate of Cook from 1998 to 2007 and remained a strong advocate for tourism through his involvement with the Parliamentary Friends of Tourism Group and a range of tourism, education and community organisations.

He was also a former Chair of Business Events Sydney and held board positions with organisations including Sydney Opera House, Sydney Theatre Company and Lord Howe Island.

He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to Mr Baird, describing him as “a real gentleman and a true parliamentarian” whose service was characterised by distinction, principle and unwavering humanity.

Mr Baird’s contribution to public life and to the growth and development of Australia’s visitor economy leaves a lasting legacy that will be remembered across the sector.

Destination NSW extends its sincere condolences to his children Julia, Steve and Mike, and to his family, friends and colleagues.
