By embedding inclusion, accessibility and cultural diversity across the visitor economy, Destination NSW aims to strengthen social cohesion and unlock new opportunities for growth.

By fostering universal access, multicultural representation and welcoming experiences, Destination NSW endeavours to ensure that every visitor feels a sense of belonging and is inspired to return.

Destination NSW is working with accessibility agency Get Skilled Access from 2024–2027 to improve accessibility and inclusion in the NSW visitor economy.

This includes:

  • Understanding the accessible visitor experience by conducting regional assessments across a range of destinations and visitor experience in NSW, from the perspective of visitors with accessibility needs.
  • Building business capability by using insights from these regional assessments to deliver tailored support that helps visitor economy businesses offer and promote accessible and inclusive experiences.
  • Communicating to visitors by providing quality information on how they can access and enjoy visitor experiences and destinations.
  • Destination NSW launched a new Accessible and Inclusive Tourism page in the 2024–25 financial year on its corporate website, with resources to assist NSW visitor economy businesses to create spaces and experiences that feel welcoming for everyone.
  • The Destination NSW corporate website features a Quick tips for creating accessible and inclusive experiences guide; details on the Australian Government’s WELCOME Framework, a
guide to making tourism more accessible to all travellers; and a four-part, on-demand webinar series presented by Get Skilled Access, founded by Paralympian and disability advocate Dylan Alcott AO, as part of the NSW First Program. In the 2024–25 financial year the webinars were attended by 359 participants and achieved an average 96 per cent satisfaction rating.

Case study: Vivid Sydney shines a light on accessibility

Destination NSW is committed to making Vivid Sydney a safe, inclusive and enjoyable annual event for all.

Vivid Sydney 2025 featured accessible options to make Vivid Sydney memorable for guests of all abilities.

The Vivid Light Walk was wheelchair accessible, with a downloadable map made available that included accessible routes and signposted facilities to help visitors navigate the festival with ease.

Destination NSW also produced a Visual Story for Vivid Sydney 2025 in partnership with Autism Spectrum Australia and Get Skilled Access.

It included a communication board to help visitors communicate without volunteers and Vivid Sydney staff speaking, information on obtaining Hidden Disability Sunflower lanyards and information on Vivid Sydney’s support for Gig Buddies, an organisation that pairs volunteers with people with a disability.
