Aboriginal tourism

Aboriginal tourism offers visitors the opportunity to connect with the world's oldest living culture.

Aboriginal tourism offers visitors the opportunity to connect with the world's oldest living culture through authentic experiences, storytelling and connection to Country. Aboriginal tourism experiences provide a powerful way for visitors to better understand the history, cultures, languages and continuing traditions of Aboriginal people across New South Wales.

Aboriginal tourism is one of Australia's most distinctive visitor experiences and a key strength of the NSW visitor economy. Increasingly, domestic and international visitors are seeking meaningful cultural experiences that provide authentic insight into Aboriginal knowledge, heritage and ways of life.

Aboriginal tourism experiences can include:

  • Cultural walking tours
  • Guided experiences on Country
  • Aboriginal storytelling and language experiences
  • Bush tucker and native food experiences
  • Cultural performances and demonstrations
  • Nature and wildlife experiences led by Aboriginal guides
  • Art, gallery and museum experiences
  • Aboriginal cultural centres
  • Aboriginal owned accommodation
  • Wellness and healing on Country experiences
  • Adventure tourism experiences incorporating Aboriginal culture

These experiences create opportunities for Aboriginal communities to share culture, generate economic benefits, support cultural revitalisation and strengthen connections between visitors and place.

Aboriginal tourism experiences help to:

  • Share and celebrate Aboriginal culture, stories and traditions
  • Support Aboriginal-owned tourism businesses and employment
  • Enhance visitor understanding of Australia's history and identity
  • Foster meaningful cultural exchange and reconciliation
  • Create unique and memorable visitor experiences
  • Encourage visitors to engage more deeply with destinations and landscapes

Visitors consistently seek experiences that are authentic, immersive and guided by local knowledge holders. Aboriginal experiences delivers all three.
