Nature-based tourism involves connecting with and exploring the natural environment. With more than 895 national parks, 530 state forests, 2000km of coastline and an extensive network of rivers and lakes, NSW offers a rich and diverse natural landscape.
The National Visitor Survey, Nature and Outdoor Activity Tourism to NSW identifies NSW as Australia’s leading destination for nature-based travel, attracting 35.3 million domestic visitors in 2024 who engaged in nature or outdoor-based activities. This data confirms nature-based travel is a key driver of high-value visitor experiences and regional economic prosperity across NSW.
Nature-based experiences include activities such as:
- Visiting national parks and state forests
- Wildlife encounters
- Half-, full- or multi-day walks
- Cycling, rail trails and mountain biking
- Glamping, camping and nature-based stays
- Stargazing and seasonal sightseeing.
Why focus on nature-based experiences?
Tourism Research Australia data shows demand for nature-based travel in Australia grew by 47 per cent from 2014 to 2023. The fastest growing experiences in the sector are:
- Bushwalking and rainforest walks (81 per cent growth)
- Visiting national or state parks (73 per cent growth)
- Cycling (53 per cent growth)
Beyond the growth in demand, visitors are increasingly seeking authentic, immersive experiences that allow them to connect more deeply with nature.
Nature‑based experiences help businesses stand out by:
- Showcasing unique landscapes, wildlife and local stories
- Inspiring longer stays and encouraging repeat visits
- Providing appealing off-season activities that help boost visitation during quieter periods.
Understanding key terms
Nature-based tourism, ecotourism and responsible travel are often used interchangeably, however each has its own meaning that should be considered when designing a visitor experience:
