The TCS Sydney Marathon created history on 31 August 2025, setting a new record for the largest marathon ever held in Australia.

Event organisers have revealed there were 32,979 marathon finishers from more than 150 countries, who were cheered on by 300,000 spectators.

Bathed in sunshine, the best of Sydney was on full display to a global audience, with runners and wheelies starting at the Harbour Bridge before navigating beautiful parklands and the harbour foreshore, en route to the world’s most spectacular marathon finish line at the iconic Sydney Opera House.

In becoming one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, Sydney has joined the ranks of the great marathon cities of the world – New York, Boston, London, Chicago, Tokyo and Berlin – with its elevated status projected to inject an estimated $300 million into the NSW visitor economy over the next decade.

Destination NSW is proud to support the TCS Sydney Marathon and to have been on the journey every step of the way to it becoming an Abbott World Marathon Major.

Congratulations to Hailemaryam Kiros (men’s), Sifan Hassan (women’s), Marcel Hug (wheelchair men’s) and Susannah Scaroni (wheelchair women’s) who were crowned the inaugural champions of the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS as an Abbott World Marathon Major.

All four course records were broken on Sunday, with the men’s and women’s marathon champions clocking the fastest times ever run on Australian soil and the men’s and women’s wheelchair winners posting the fastest marathons ever wheeled in the nation’s history.

All the records broken at the TCS Sydney Marathon 2025

For the second consecutive year, Guinness World Records and the TCS Sydney Marathon joined forces to celebrate record attempts during the Sydney Marathon 2025.

For the first time in history, runners who finished the Sydney Marathon received a Six Star Medal, adding Australia to the original legs of the Six Star Journey: Tokyo, London, Berlin, New York, Boston and Chicago.

Out of 19 runners who attempted to secure a Guinness World Records (GWR) title, a total of 13 records were broken or set.

The first runner to cross the finish line and earn a GWR certificate with his medal was Mohd Syahidan Bin Alias (Malaysia).

The athlete, who smashed the record for the fastest marathon dressed in traditional Malay dress during the London Marathon in 2023, clocked a remarkable 02:44:12 and completed the fastest marathon in a school uniform (male).

This isn't the first time Mohd has broken a record in Australia: in 2018, he ran the fastest marathon dressed as a flag.

GWR Adjudicator Brian Sobel said: "Every year, the TCS Sydney Marathon brings together some of the most motivating and determined runners from across Australia and beyond,.

"I’m always inspired by the race’s participants, but it’s especially a joy to witness the runners strive to break both their personal bests and the world record. This year, the 13 who achieved a Guinness World Record will walk away remembering their feats, having secured a place in the iconic pages of the next annual.”
