The Blak Markets is proud to be home at La Perouse in its new location in front of La Perouse Museum, with a Festival program running alongside the stalls on Sunday, March 8 from 10am till 3pm
This is your opportunity to purchase authentic and unique products, knowing that 100 per cent of the profits go back to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
According to Peter Cooley, CEO of First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation, which runs the Blak Markets, its aim is to ensure Aboriginal people can once again engage in the thriving commercial economy that existed at La Perouse.
“I grew up in La Perouse watching the men carving wood and the women making shell art,’ Mr Cooley said.
“But to imagine what we were aiming for when we first started the Blak Markets back in La Perouse in 2014 - you’d have to imagine yourself back in the 1920s when people swarmed to La Perouse to enjoy the snake shows, Aboriginal artists and our beaches before taking the twilight tram back to Sydney.
“Things have changed since we started but the deep interest in Aboriginal culture continues as does the Blak Markets; which after starting out at Bare Island La Perouse 12 years ago, now operates around Sydney and regional NSW as well as part of the National Indigenous Art Fair.
“Spend a day immersed in culture, creativity and community. There will be stall holders who are creating authentic, original and affordable Aboriginal artworks, beauty products, jewellery, fashion and unique homewares.
"You can also experience Aboriginal culture through free dance, singing, children’s fishing and weaving workshops for everyone to join in.”
