The NSW Government is investing in a $5 million upgrade to the South Coast's key aviation hub, Merimbula Airport.

The project aims boost the South Coast’s local economy as part of the NSW Government's plan to drive economic development and support job creation in regional NSW.


The runway extension at Merimbula Airport will allow for larger aircraft to operate at the airport, benefiting essential goods and health services, boosting passenger transport opportunities, strengthening capacity for aeromedical and emergency services and increasing tourism opportunities.

The project will extend the Merimbula Airport runway at both ends, increasing take-off length from 1602 metres to 1800 metres.

Minister for Agriculture and Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty said: “The upgrades to Merimbula Airport will help future-proof the region in terms of essential and emergency services and position the South Coast to make the most of future tourism opportunities."

In the year ending March 2025, the South Coast attracted 1.6 million overnight visitors and $1.1 billion in visitor economy expenditure.

The region ranked second in regional NSW for visitors, nights and expenditure during the period.
